JAMBOREE SITE

PROPOSED JAMBOREE SITE ON SOBIESZEWO ISLAND

The proposed site of the Jamboree Village is Sobieszewo Island in Gdansk. Gdansk is located in Pomerania, the northern region of Poland, on the Gulf of Gdansk (the Baltic Sea) and in a transitional zone of warm temperate climate.

Although Sobieszewo Island is a part of Gdansk, it has preserved its charming natural environment and is located away from the urban development areas. East of the city centre, it is nestled between the Vistula river delta and the Baltic Sea. It is a lowland area of high natural wealth. The island’s northern strip along the sea is a wide beach bordered by a forest. On the western side of the island, there are some residential areas of single-family homes.

The location proposed for the Jamboree Village is the island’s central and southern farmland containing 300 hectares of fields and meadows. What sets the area apart are the crisscrossing irrigation canals.

null

LANDFORM

The site designed for the Jamboree Village is flat, crisscrossed with irrigation canals, a spacious area to pitch tents, the scenery of the area around is diverse – some hilly, undulating, with a shaft and dunes, partially forested.

MEDIA & FACILITIES

The Island is supplied from the municipal water supply network. Water supply network will carter for the Jamboree-specified daily water demand.

MEDIA & FACILITIES

Amber Expo (proposed Check-In-Centre) is just 20 minutes away from the Jamboree village, the existing infrastructure allows to fit more than 250 coaches.

TECHNICAL ISSUES, LANDFORM, ARCHITECTURE

THE BRIDGE

The Island development plans assume the construction of yet another bridge linking the city and the Island.  The already existing bridges are sufficient for the communication, yet the development plans of the Island make it natural to consider providing its residents with the modern road infrastructure, adapted to their needs and ready to handle the increased road traffic. The ground for the bridge was broken on 17thof September.

LIFE CLOSE TO WATER

Another crucial touch point for planning water presence in the urban and natural scenery design of the Jamboree village is the network of irrigation canals criss-crossing its area. It defines its form and definitely affects and inspires design patterns. Every participant will have the opportunity of daily contact with water to know and feel what it is like to live on an island. The existing canals set natural spacial borderlines and the starting point to adapt design solutions enabling to extol the nature, yet preserving its unique, local character. They also foster the high-quality public space arrangement which, apart from being functional, would also cater for the most sophisticated array of aesthetic and cultural needs.

null

INFRASTRUCTURE

The Island is supplied from the municipal water supply network that will cater for the Jamboree specified daily water demand.

PARTICIPANTS

Our suggestion is to enable 40,000 people in total – 32,000 Participants to take part in Jamboree together with 8,000 members of International Service Team (IST). However, we are prepared to expand the numbers to 45,000.

The past years led to a conclusion that the weather conditions demonstrated repeatable pattern in the period scheduled. An average temperature in July and August is 21ºC with an average humidity of 55%.

Drawing up our proposal, we are aware that carrying out such a large event must not have negative impact on the natural environment. In order to neutralise the effects of our actions, we intend to adapt a number  of environmentally-friendly solutions.

When building the jamboree village, we are going to use as many provisional construction solutions as possible. after the event, the village is planned to be taken down, and we are determined to do our best to reverse all the changes made to the local landscape that would be undesirable for further development of sobieszewo island. as regards facilities requiring heavy earthwork and construction, we are going to use the least invasive technologies available.

Preparation of the jamboree site requires building parts of roads network, as well as water supply and sewage systems. Considering that such investment is going to leave a permanent mark on the island, these have been marked out on the basis of the existing spatial planning documents.

The jamboree is going to contribute to and accelerate the development of the island’s planned infrastructure.
